Vehicle Guide

• All entrants must hold a current, unrestricted and unsuspended driver’s licence.
• A physical or digital licence must be presented at scrutineering.
• If no licence is presented, scrutineering cannot be conducted.
• Entrant transfers are not permitted at any time.

• The number plate must match the VIN.
• If the vehicle is unregistered, an Unregistered Vehicle Permit must be purchased to allow cruising on the Summernats cruise route.
• If the vehicle is unregistered and on display only, for example in the Top 60 Hall or on a trade space, a No Cruising Permit will be issued.

• Exterior paintwork must be in neat condition and consistent with the vehicle’s presentation.
• Examples of non-compliance include tyre slap damage or mismatched panels.

• Front and rear bumper bars are compulsory for all burnout competitors at scrutineering.

a. Wheel nuts on all studs

• All wheel studs must be fitted with wheel nuts.
• Wheel weights must be removed for burnout competition.

b. Matching wheels front and rear

• Wheels must be the same style front and rear at scrutineering.
• The only exception is when travelling directly to the Burnout Pad for competition.

c. Wheel guards

• If wheels protrude beyond the body, the vehicle must be fitted with guards that fully enclose them.

• Tyres must be in serviceable condition with no visible belts, canvas or flat spots.
• Vehicles fitted with drag slicks will be issued a No Cruising Permit.

• Operational brakes must be fitted.
• Front and rear brakes are required to cruise on the cruise route.
• Some burnout vehicles may have front brakes only.
• Brake size and calliper size must be appropriate to the level of modification.
• Brake operation and pedal function are checked at scrutineering.

• Seatbelts must be correctly fitted and operational for all front and rear seating positions.
• Vehicles manufactured before seatbelts were mandatory may cruise but cannot compete in driving events.

• Seats must be securely mounted and bolted in place.

• Tailshaft loops are recommended for burnout vehicles.

• A continuous exhaust system must extend past the last door or to the rear axle line.
• Side-exiting exhausts must direct exhaust gases downward.
• A downward-deflecting cover is acceptable.
• The exhaust system must be present to pass scrutineering.
• Open headers are permitted during burnout competition only.

• Firewalls must isolate the driver from the engine compartment and fuel tank or cell.
• This includes wagons and vans with rear-mounted fuel cells.
• Firewalls must be metal, securely fitted and sealed.
• Firewalls made from flammable materials, including wood or plastic, will not pass scrutineering.

• Fuel tanks and cells must be separated from the cabin, purpose-built and securely mounted using appropriate brackets.
• Ratchet straps or temporary fixtures are not permitted.
• The fuel system must be sealed to prevent fuel entering the cabin in the event of an accident or spill.

• Fuel lines and fillers must be designed for automotive use and correctly rated for the fuel type.

• The battery must be securely mounted using approved securing devices.
• Cable ties and ratchet straps are not permitted.

• The vehicle must only start in Park or Neutral.
• If the engine turns over in any other gear, the vehicle will fail scrutineering.

• A throttle return mechanism must be fitted so that all throttles close in the event of linkage or system failure.
• No loose or unsecured components are permitted.

• A blower belt guard is required for any blower protruding through the bonnet.

• Any turbocharger protruding through the bonnet must have an inlet filter or screen and heat wrap on the hot side.
• Exhaust systems must not exit through side guards.
• Side-exiting exhausts must direct exhaust gases downward or be fitted with a downward-deflecting cover.

• A bonnet must be fitted to pass scrutineering.
• The only exemption is during burnout competition.
• Vehicles without a bonnet will be issued a No Cruising Permit.

• A fire extinguisher (minimum 900g capacity AS1841) is compulsory for all vehicles at Summernats 39
• Competing vehicles must have a mounted extinguisher, while all other vehicles may either mount it or store it in a secure location.
• Ideally, the extinguisher should be placed inside the cabin, typically mounted to the floor on the passenger side in front of the seat. It can also be mounted in the front passenger footwell area.
• Storing it in the boot is acceptable but not preferred due to the delay caused by unlocking the boot and retrieving the extinguisher in an emergency. In some cases, a large glovebox may also be a suitable location.
• The most important requirement is that the extinguisher is firmly secured and not loose inside the vehicle.

a. Fire extinguisher (minimum 900g, AS1841)

• A minimum 900 g charged dry chemical extinguisher mounted within the vehicle cabin.

b. Burnout competitor personal protective equipment

Drivers and passengers must wear:

• A fire suit meeting or exceeding SFI 3.2A/5 or FIA 8856:2000, or another standard recognised by Motorsport Australia
• Closed-toe shoes
• A helmet meeting or exceeding AS/NZS 1698:2006 or UNECE 22.05
