Vehicle Guide

Your complete guide to vehicle requirements and standards for Summernats 39.

Do You Have What It Takes To Be A Summernats Entrant?

Summernats entrants bring the toughest, most highly modified and coolest cars in the country.

More than that, they represent a passionate automotive community built on craftsmanship, pride and individuality.

This is where innovation meets attitude and horsepower does the talking.

What Makes A Summernats Entrant?

Summernats entrants bring cars that do more than turn heads. They look, sound and perform unlike anything that left a factory floor, with owners obsessed over every detail.

As Australia’s biggest horsepower party, Summernats draws fans from around the world to witness raw innovation, craftsmanship and mechanical muscle in one place.

Got a ride over 35 years old still rocking its original vibe? You qualify too.

Who Can Enter?

  • All entrants must hold a current, unrestricted and unsuspended driver’s licence
  • A physical licence must be presented at scrutineering
  • Learner driver permits are not accepted
  • Provisional license holders may enter, however restrictions apply. Refer to the Entrant Terms and Conditions
  • Entrants under 18 years of age must have parent or guardian consent

Summernats reserves the right to refuse any vehicle that does not meet entry requirements. This includes, but is not limited to, vehicles deemed unsafe, poor constructed, visually standard post-1980 models, or those displaying objectionable elements or themes.

Event Sanctioning

All competition and non-competition vehicle activity at Summernats is governed by Motorsport Australia Regulations and the Summernats Event Supplementary Regulations. All entrants must comply with these regulations at all times.

Vehicle Requirements

These can include, but are not limited to:

  • Paint and body modifications
  • Engine performance upgrades and engine bay presentation
  • Custom fabrication
  • Wheel, suspension and brake upgrades
  • Custom interior work, including aftermarket audio

As a guide, we look for four or more modifications during scrutineering or judging.

Some builds are subtle, others are bold and over the top. We welcome them all. To keep the event fresh, we aim for a strong mix of styles that reflects the full spectrum of street machine culture.

When too many cars have the same look, it reduces the variety that defines Summernats. The event exists to showcase innovation, individuality and boundary-pushing builds.

Bring cars that turn heads, spark conversations and raise the bar.

What Is A Visually Standard Vehicle?

A visually standard vehicle may not meet the expectations of a high-impact street machine event due to a lack of clear modifications or standout design features. Indicators can include:

  • Minimal customisation: Aftermarket wheels or a lowered stance alone are considered modest compared with extensive bodywork, engine upgrades or custom paintwork
  • Limited visual impact: Plain paint finishes without clear colour updates, eye-catching finishes or custom airbrushing
  • Understated presentation: No visible signs of significant performance upgrades, unique body kits or interior customisation
  • Limited creativity: Modifications that appear basic and do not reflect the level of craftsmanship celebrated at these shows

Summernats prioritises vehicles that push design and engineering boundaries, ensuring a strong, diverse and visually striking line-up.

Scrutineering Minimum Requirements

Scrutineering is the process where your vehicle is inspected for compliance with event regulations and any competition-specific requirements.

  • Headlights, tail lights, brake lights and indicators are required.
  • If any of these are not operational at scrutineering, a No Cruising Permit will be issued.
