Scott Abdy and his ‘Deaf Trap’ blown HT ute set to return to Rockynats

Bundaberg burnout driver Scott Abdy was just three years old when doctors told his parents he would never ride a bike, and yet, here he is decades later, gearing up to return to the Rare Spares and Repco Rockynats 06 burnout pad with precision, power, and an unmistakable passion for skids.

Born in Maryborough, Scott contracted meningitis at just three years old, a life-threatening battle that cost him his hearing and rendered him completely deaf. But Scott is adamant that his story has never been about limitations, it’s about adaptation, determination, and the thrill of pushing boundaries.

“My parents were told I’d never ride a bike because I lost my balance,” Scott recounts. “I had to travel to Sydney to get a cochlear implant when I was four and was actually the first kid in Queensland to get one in Sydney.”

Cars became his world early. Growing up on a two-acre property in Bundaberg, Scott got his first taste of driving at ten in a VB SLE Commodore. By the time he was a teenager, his parents had bought him a KE20 manual Corolla so he could learn to master manual transmission and how to rely on feeling and vibration alone.

“It took a lot of practice to learn how to feel when to change the gears seeing as I couldn’t hear the engine, but once I learnt how to do it, there was no stopping me,” Scott recalls.

“I was only 13 when I drove the car out on the back roads to do burnouts while Mum and Dad were at work and I was caught by the cops. Funnily enough, I didn’t hear them coming and was too short to see them in the mirrors….Mum and Dad were not happy with me.”

After honing his skills on mates’ burnout pads, he earned his stripes competing in the Bundy Burnouts competition, building and competing in cars like his 1974 KE Corolla with a 253 engine swap and a VX SS Commodore with a stroked LS3.

After a blown engine led to a five-year competition hiatus, friends convinced him to return to the sport by purchasing a LS Engine on marketplace on whim. This led to him to build Deaf Trap, his 1970 HT Ute with a 6/71 blower and all the power needed to dominate the burnout pad.

What sets Scott apart isn’t just his skill, it’s the way he throws himself into competition and chasing the thrill of a good skid, regardless of any perceived limitations.

He insists that no special modifications are needed. Just raw talent, practiced precision, and an unshakable love of driving.

“Sure, I may not be able to hear the engine, but I can feel it. Being deaf doesn’t stop me from doing anything or competing like anyone else,” he affirms.

“I have a mate help me with communication if needed, but otherwise behind the wheel, it’s just me and the car.”

2026 will be Scott and Deaf Trap’s third Rockynats appearance, having attended regularly with mates Graeme Yeomans and Mikey Genrich since Rockynats 04. To Scott, Rockynats is about so much more than competition, being an opportunity to spend a weekend with people who live for the same adrenaline, roar, and energy.

“I love meeting people at the event and making new friends who share the same passion as I do. It’s not too far from Bundy either so it’s easy for family, friends and fans to travel there to watch.”

Scott will once again lay it all on the line at the Buddy’s Fire Burnout Precinct alongside more than 100 competitors from across the country, with Rare Spares and Repco Rockynats 06 boasting its biggest prize pool to date, including Summernats wildcard invites for Open and Redemption class winners and up to $20,000 on the line in Burnout Pro competion.

Rockynats 06 spectator tickets start from $44 for a single-day adult pass, giving fans access to all event precincts and nightly concerts, and are available at here.
